THE CREATIVE PROCESS

Why did you decide to become an artist? And why focus on scent as your medium?

LISA SHTORMIT

My path in art began in my childhood. My parents sent me to a professional art school. At the end of school and thought other not was, that can be any other profession except associated with art. I could only be an artist. I am glad that my parents made such a choice and gave me, for example, not in the ballet. I can safely eat chocolate desserts at night, drink wine with baguette and cheese. I work not only as an artist, but for more than 10 years as a curator. As an artist, I sometimes have few tasks, questions and problems that I can solve. The curator is also the producer. I come up with a project, look for implementers, participate in the process and get the result. This is also the result of my creative activity. And as many insist, I would not separate these my two spheres of work. They're part of me.

I've been doing olfactory installations for the last few years. For me, this is an opportunity (as for the artist who passed the academic school from and to) to open new facets of art. not just spray paint on canvas and talk about the uniqueness of this gesture, which has long lost its value. For me, this is an opportunity to influence the viewer through emotions. It is invisible art. This is the topic we are currently discussing in my graduate program ENDA in PARIS. Smells for me are feelings and emotions, of which the body consists. The spectator is not a walking art theory. The viewer is the same person who perceives the world emotionally. I want to play with it and experiment, cheat, joke and surprise. Smells are the most honest for me the genre, maybe the viewer on a physical level, departs from the source of art if it does not planet or not clear. Very like it or to and on exhibitions was so same. Don't like the black square, back off. No need to suffer. I'm doing that. Sometimes when I leave, then sometimes I come back to analyze what is wrong.

Olfactory memory is the most durable memory in humans. This is scientifically proven. The theme of Fesival Marais was that of travel. I worked with the materials at hand. so how to bring those ingredients or to order the perfume is long. I used in most cases the usual household smells that surround us in the kitchen, in the bathroom or on the desktop. So for example smelled like toothpaste, which gives an associative smell of cleanliness, freshness.

The most accurate smell of my compositions was the smell of Amsterdam, Vienna. The smell of India I created from spices and incense sticks.

In Russia, I traveled not so much and some bright olfactory questions I have about it.

In this project there was no history of associated with people, the smell of the cities, the smell of the seats, that happened to me this project more in depth, than to show what you project out in the city environment. As Munich smells to me a balm for keeps, which I then there was sick of traveling with a heavy backpack. The bright smell of Salzburg for example is horse manure.

For the Center for Contemporary Art Winzavod I gave a lecture on olfactory art and already read it for the project Limud Moscow. The exhibition featured a book of memories where viewers shared their memories of these cities.

I lead creative thinking and olfactory emerged from the first exercise I give to my students. It's very simple, just write a list of things that inspire you and that you like. Voila! This list can be supplemented constantly. This is your permanent book with a golden supply of ideas.

THE CREATIVE PROCESS

When you look to the future and the world we leave to the next generation, what is the importance of creativity and art?

SHTORMIT

The future is in collaborations and interdisciplinarity, but only narrowly professional. I was lucky. I always work with talented professionals, with refined taste and a great sense of humor. Now plans for the project associated with the music. Music is not a visible art, which has a strong impact on the viewer. I will work with the best composer from Paris Nicolas Romme.

In Russian, creativity and “creativity” are two different things. I was developing a creative thinking program. it is believed that creativity can do everything, but unfortunately, or rather for me it's fortunately, tvorchestvo this is not art therapy. many artists have gone down in history healing their wounds and problems, but possessing professional skills. Art has nothing to do with art therapy. Art can only be practiced by a limited number of people. According to my personal statistics, and conclusions if a person is not born with the gene of creative thinking, then it is almost impossible to develop it. So and not need to suffer I believe. I here am not able to skate well or write programs for computers, well I perfectly know the other opportunities and talents. I don't drive very well yet. But art is still not a set of mechanical skills, it is a different level of consciousness and thinking. Artists have different eyes. Another view. And contact lenses won't help.

Art will remain important after the era of transition to digital sources. Again, the price will be created by the hands of art. Perhaps not all the works of the old masters will be able to be saved. Well, what kind of future are we talking about the next 20 years or 200-300?

Art will be more optional, I think that the person of the future will choose coming to the Museum option as he wants to see it today. It will be something like glasses with a program that will choose what you see today, and what is blurred for you, because you want today romantic pictures and seals, and do not want to think about labor and war.

I'd love to use those glasses myself. In the modern flow of re-information, a lot of things are not necessary. Even in a Museum you go to look at installations, and you see pictures on the theme of the horrors of war, for example, or scenes of violence. Sometimes it works well and the viewer may think it is right, but not in the mood you can just get bad. I am very receptive to this kind of topics, so I chose to work with a "light" theme of humor, interactivity and sarcasm. Institutional criticism and olfactory work is what gives me pleasure. And most importantly, any art from the past, present or future can not be done without love. Without love to material, to theme, to the viewer, to what good. I don't like to be tormented by bad performances. I feel that a person does not love himself, does not love me and does not respect. The themes are different, deep and heavy. About them, too, need to to speak. But understand when and how. It's as important as a bad performance has a place to be, but it must be specially made bad to say something more important.

We plan to write a number of articles about creative thinking and publish a book that helps to see the world around us, TK everything that we draw around us. how to surround yourself with what you can create art from. how to start seeing it.
